The National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) is a joint labor-management educational trust fund serving the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) and the employers who employ its members. Some of NEIEP’s main responsibilities are to manage and direct the implementation of curriculum design, and administer and monitor probationary training and evaluation programs for all apprentices entering the trade. The overall mission of NEIEP is to improve the knowledge and skills of apprentices and mechanics not only for their benefit, but also for the benefit of their employer and the industry. NEIEP also assists the employers within the IUEC by periodically conducting recruitment drives and creating lists of qualified applicants from which new apprentices are hired by elevator companies.

Responsibilities

Responsible for assisting in the installation, maintenance and repair of the passenger and freight elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters and moving sidewalks under the direction of a Mechanic. This description is intended to describe the general content, identify the essential functions, and set forth the requirements for performance of this job. Other duties may be assigned and this is not to be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or requirements.

1. Manually loads, unloads and moves materials, equipment and tools from vehicles to work areas. Requires lifting parts weighing up to 100 lbs.

2. Manually cleans elevator car tops, machine rooms, pits, rails, and hoistways within non-controlled climate field setting.

3. Manually paints machine rooms and pit.

4. Uses periods of high concentration and knowledge of elevator systems to assist Mechanic in electrical and mechanical installation, repair or service operations. Requires following written or verbal directions of mechanic and/or field superintendent. Requires color perception to distinguish color-coded wiring components.

5. Maintains elevator lighting fixtures.

6. Visually and audibly monitors equipment operation to determine faulty functioning. Requires ability to withstand heights and cramped working conditions.

Qualifications

Education/Minimum Requirements:

1. HS diploma, or equivalent (GED) is required.

2. Must be at least 18 years or over.

3. Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Knowledge:

1. The ability to understand general arithmetic.

2. The ability to speak and write in a clear and understandable manner for internal/external relations.

3. The ability to understand verbal or written instructions.

4. The ability to successfully complete all required NEIEP courses.

5. The ability to learn, practice, and adhere to safety standards.

Mental Effort:

1. The ability to maintain normal attention spans, with intermittent periods of high concentration, to assist the mechanic in electrical and mechanical installation, repair or service operations.

2. The ability to perform administrative duties, such as data gathering and submitting written reports.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

1. The ability to walk or stand for long periods of time on the job.

2. The ability to lift up to 100 lbs.

3. The ability to perform repetitive stooping, forward bending, and crouching.

4. The ability and willingness to travel extensively.

5. The ability to perform essential job functions in a field setting with exposure to non-climate controlled conditions.

6. The ability and willingness to withstand heights and to work in cramped working conditions.

Manual Dexterity:

1. The ability to use hands, arms and feet for repetitive lifting.

2. The ability to use hands and arms to operate various hand and power tools, and to record written information.

3. The ability to perceive color to distinguish color coded wiring components.

If you are interested in the Elevator Constructor Apprenticeship Program at any of our Locals, please read the following description of our process carefully:

1) If your application is complete, including required attachments, and you meet the minimum qualifications, you will receive an email (generally within a couple of weeks) through the iCIMS system from the Local Area Coordinator scheduling you to take the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (EIAT) which is a validated basic skills exam designed to measure your potential success in the Elevator Trade. Your abilities will be assessed in the areas of reading, mechanical comprehension, and arithmetic computation. Following the EIAT you will also take a Tool Assessment designed to assess your knowledge of basic tools and their use, as well as basic measuring skills. Please note that when you are scheduled for the exam the date and time cannot be changed and you must present a picture ID in order to sit for the exam . The EIAT is scored on a pass/fail basis, with 70% correct being the minimum passing grade. Applicants who fail the EIAT will NOT be interviewed and will be removed from the pool of applicants; however, they may re-apply during subsequent recruiting periods.

2) Applicants who pass the EIAT will receive an email through the iCIMS system from the Area Coordinator notifying them that they have passed the exam, and scheduling them with an interview with representatives from the Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC). Once again, interview times cannot be changed. A hiring committee consisting of at least one individual from both the Employer and the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) will conduct the interviews. All applicants will be asked the same set of questions, and interviewers will take notes during the interview.

3) Applicants will be scored based upon Education, Work Experience, Oral Interview, and Tool Assessment, and will be placed on a ranked list, with the highest scoring individual being placed at the top of the list. All applicants of the results, and applicants will be placed as apprentices based on their rank in this pool of eligible candidates. Applicants not selected for employment will remain on the ranked list for a period of two years.
